The Wandering Workshop
Jose Navarro and Athina Doukaki are the creators and founders of The Wandering Workshop, ‘Toys Made of Dreams’, a Hellenic toy brand based in Chania, Crete.
The Wandering Workshop made its first creative steps in the small Cycladic island of Ios, where a dream-like toy collection of Aegean inspiration was launched. The Wandering Workshop has recently moved to a small village of Apokoronas, Chania, in a stone-built, traditional Cretan building.
Jose is a perfectionist wood-worker and a genuinely optimistic toy-maker. He studied Sculpture applied on design in Madrid and Restoration and Conservation of Sculpture in Barcelona. He worked in the field of Restoration in Barcelona and as an illustrator for excavations in the windy islands of the Aegean. The Wandering Workshop is for him a continuously evolving project that focuses on creating open-ended wooden toys for both children and adults.
Athina is a stubborn dreamer. She loves the sea, the coffee and creating stories with words on paper or through hand-crafting wooden toys. She studied Archaeology and History of Art in Athens and had a Master in Prehistoric Archaeology in Thessaloniki and Barcelona. She has been working for the last years as an archaeologist in excavations in the Aegean islands. The Wandering Workshop is about creating high-quality wooden toys in a beautiful corner of the planet and propose slow play in a mass-producing world.
The story of The Wandering Workshop started with collages and sketches in traveling notebooks, somewhere between Barcelona, Crete, and the islands of the Aegean…and it has materialized in an eco-friendly collection of contemporary, high-quality wooden toys that have a story to tell. Bringing imagination to play is the basic concept in our work.
