King Kreon as Merilyn Manson!
Handmade ceramic figure by Lulu Vandal, part of The Kings collection. A limited edition collection that presents heroes from ancient Greek tragedies in drag roles!
In Antigone, Creon is the ruler of Thebes. Oedipus's sons, Eteocles and Polynices, had shared the rule jointly until they quarreled, and Eteocles expelled his brother. In Sophocles' account, the two brothers agreed to alternate rule each year, but Eteocles decided not to share power with his brother after his tenure expired. Polynices left the kingdom, gathered an army and attacked the city of Thebes in the war of the Seven against Thebes.
The Thebans won the war, but both sons of Oedipus were killed, leaving Creon as s ruler once more. Creon gives Eteocles a full and honorable burial, but orders (under penalty of death) that Polynices' corpse be left to rot on the battlefield as punishment for his treason. Such state of non - burial was considered a frightening and terrible prospect in the culture of ancient Greece. Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta, who is betrothed ton Creon's son Haemon, defies him by burrying her brother, and is condemned to be entombed alive as punishment. As a result Antigone hangs herself rather than be burried alive. An act that is to be followed bt Creon's son, Haemon, who also ends up taking his own life but also Creon's wife and mother of Haemon, Eurydice who also kills herself.
The chacacter of King Creon meets that of the American singer, Merylin Manson. Known for his controversial stage personality and image as the lead singer of the band od the same name of which he remains the only constant member. Like the other founding members of the band, his stage name was formed by combining and juxtaposing the names of two opposing American cultural icons: a sex symbol and a serial killer, in Manson's case, actress Marilyn Monroe and criminal Charles Manson.
In ancient Greek tragedy, kings were presented in an incomparable, almighty way, untill Gods would decide otherwise dragging them into the most surreal situations. Lulu Vandal is dragging them into another directions! Into Drag = (dressed as girls literally dressed as someone that dresses like a queen in our case). In an attempt to humanize them.
